Scouts Took Advancement into Their Own Hands
The inaugural Great Rivers Scouting Merit Badge Marathon at the Scouting Adventure Center proved that when Scouts are given flexibility, choice, and engaging learning opportunities, they show up in a big way.
Built around the theme “A Merit Badge Marathon – Run It Your Way,” this innovative six-day event reimagined traditional merit badge opportunities by allowing Scouts to create their own schedules, attend the days that worked best for them, and pursue the badges that matched their interests and goals. The result was an exciting week of advancement, discovery, and Scouting fellowship that exceeded expectations.
By the Numbers
The success of the event can be seen through some impressive statistics:
- 158 Scouts attended
- Scouts traveled from 4 different states
- Participants represented 7 different Scout councils
- Scouts came from 73 different troops
- 95 in-council Scouts participated
- 63 out-of-council Scouts joined the event
- Scouts filled 556 of 605 available classroom seats
- The event achieved an outstanding 91.9% classroom capacity utilization
These numbers demonstrate not only strong local support but also the broad regional appeal of the Merit Badge Marathon concept.
Flexibility Drove Participation
One of the most unique aspects of the Merit Badge Marathon was its flexible format. Rather than asking Scouts to commit to a rigid one-day event, participants could choose the classes that best fit their schedules and advancement goals.
Some Scouts attended a single session to complete a specific badge requirement, while others participated across multiple days to maximize their advancement opportunities. This personalized approach allowed Scouts to move at their own pace and focus on the experiences most meaningful to them.
The flexibility made the event accessible to more families and gave Scouts greater ownership of their advancement journey.
Learning Through Experience
Throughout the week, Scouts participated in hands-on merit badge instruction led by dedicated and experienced counselors. Classrooms were filled with active learning, skill development, problem-solving, and exploration.
From Eagle-required badges to specialty topics, the diverse course offerings gave Scouts opportunities to expand their knowledge, challenge themselves, and make significant progress toward their Scouting goals.
The strong attendance numbers reflect the value Scouts found in these engaging educational experiences.
A Regional Gathering of Scouts
The Merit Badge Marathon brought together Scouts from across the region, creating an atmosphere of collaboration and camaraderie that extended beyond individual units.
With attendees representing 73 troops, 7 councils, and 4 states, Scouts had the opportunity to meet peers from different communities, share experiences, and strengthen the broader Scouting network.
The participation of 63 out-of-council Scouts highlights the event’s growing reputation and demonstrates the demand for quality advancement opportunities beyond local boundaries.
Looking Ahead
The overwhelming response to the first-ever Great Rivers Scouting Merit Badge Marathon has established a strong foundation for future events. Filling 556 of 605 available classroom seats is a clear indication that Scouts and families embraced the “Run It Your Way” concept and recognized its value.
Most importantly, Scouts left the event with more than completed merit badges. They gained new skills, increased confidence, explored new interests, and experienced the excitement of learning in a dynamic Scouting environment.
As Great Rivers Scouting continues to innovate and create meaningful opportunities for youth, the Merit Badge Marathon stands as a shining example of what can happen when advancement is made flexible, engaging, and Scout-driven.
