Great Rivers Council and Scouts BSA Join Missouri Severe Weather Preparedness Week With A.N.S.W.E.R. 2026

As Missouri observes Severe Weather Preparedness Week, the Great Rivers Council, Scouting America is proud to take an active role in strengthening community readiness through a unique, hands-on learning initiative for Scouts BSA: Actions & Networks in Severe Weather Emergency Response (A.N.S.W.E.R.) 2026. This full‑day immersive program empowers Scouts with the knowledge, skills, and real‑world connections needed to understand and actively support emergency response efforts during severe weather events.

Building Youth Preparedness Through Real-World Engagement

Severe Weather Preparedness Week emphasizes the importance of planning, awareness, and coordinated action—values already deeply ingrained in Scouting. A.N.S.W.E.R. 2026 brings those principles to life by introducing Scouts to the community agencies, emergency managers, and government partners who come together when Missouri faces tornadoes, flooding, derechos, and other high‑risk weather situations.

Throughout the day, Scouts will learn how these organizations operate, how they communicate, and how ordinary citizens can contribute to safer, more resilient communities. This alignment between Scouting ideals and statewide preparedness efforts makes A.N.S.W.E.R. 2026 a standout event during the week’s activities.

Immersive, Scenario-Based Learning

At the core of A.N.S.W.E.R. 2026 is a simulated severe weather incident, giving participants the chance to experience real-time decision-making and teamwork in an emergency. Guided by trained volunteers and community partners, Scouts will rotate through multiple stations and hands-on modules, including:

  • Incident Command: Understanding leadership structure during emergencies
  • Severe Weather Awareness: Identifying threats and interpreting forecasts
  • Radio Direction Finding: Tracking signals and understanding radio operations
  • Emergency Communications: Practicing clear, effective messaging during crises
  • Disaster Preparedness: Examining resources and planning steps before disasters hit
  • Individual Emergency Response: Learning what to do in the first critical minutes

These activities help Scouts not only learn about emergencies but practice how to respond thoughtfully, calmly, and effectively.

Advancement Opportunities: Merit Badges with Purpose

A.N.S.W.E.R. 2026 also supports advancement by giving Scouts the opportunity to work toward requirements for up to three merit badges:

  • Emergency Preparedness*
  • Radio
  • Weather

*Two prerequisites must be completed prior to the event for Emergency Preparedness.

These badges reinforce essential knowledge for handling real-world emergencies and complement the preparedness themes highlighted throughout the statewide observance.

Strengthening Community Connections

One of the event’s most impactful elements is the direct connection between Scouts and real emergency response professionals—from weather experts to communications specialists to local emergency managers. These partnerships show youth how their skills and leadership can contribute to safer communities today and in the future.

Held at the Scouting Adventure Center, the event situates Scouts in a supportive environment designed for experiential learning, teamwork, and skill-building. By participating, Scouts become part of a culture of readiness that benefits their families, schools, and Missouri communities.
